Superwoman complex as an anti-growth paradigm for your career

There is a lot of pressure today to reach the top of the profession or societal ladder very quickly and very early on.

I personally can relate to the pressure of unrealistic expectations which I call a Superwoman complex.

When I was considering pursuing my passion in human studies after many years and achievements in the corporate world, I was comparing myself to the maîtres of this industry and thought “I would never compare to them”. Not because I can’t, simply because they are already at the height of their career, and they are 20 years ahead of me.

That’s a typical mindset of the hyper-achiever, perfectionist and maximalist who is looking at a new phase of life from the height of their achievements up to date, expecting themselves to go from one height to another straight away, regardless of whether it is something new to them and ignoring the journey that it takes.

There is a good and bad in such approach. The good – is aiming high and having set standards of own professionalism to a higher level. The old saying has it “the higher you aim, the higher you jump”.

The bad side of it – is an enormous amount of pressure to perform straight away like “Usein Bolt”, not allowing yourself a natural vulnerability of a novice, not allowing yourself to grow into something new naturally and organically.

I personally know people who didn’t dare to pursue the change just because of the fear of starting anew. They stayed in the same old, same old rut, dreading another day at work. They paid for the comfort of already achieved status with their passion and thirst for life and adventure.

It cost me a lot too. It cost me many years feeling frustrated and a lot of pain from not pursuing something that makes me feel alive.

In eastern wisdom we would be told that the source of a talent is a soul’s work in the past lives. We can believe it or not or can simply accept it as a hypothesis. However, the mere presence of a talent doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be realised in this life.

What needs real attention is your true interest. Because you can’t fake true interest - your lasting pull towards something. That’s what your soul really wants to work on in this life and this is your true calling.

And yes, it doesn’t really care whether you will be socially successful, famous, or rich. It’s up to you.

All it cares is that you walk this journey of your soul’s growth.

All it cares is that you become an author of yourself and your life.

And judging by the rise of interest in living an authentic life and the amount of people who genuinely feel that they are not living their own life - this is a burning issue for many people.

Pursuing deep seated interest has a non-competitive unfolding essence.

It allows a growth mindset, ingenuity and curiosity.

It is natural and organic.

It recognises the complexity of human nature.

It goes against a race to follow one type of success, one type of journey, one type of happiness that must fit all.

It goes against unrealistic expectations, massive pressure of being a Superwoman at all times.

Looking for one “magic pill” solution will always rob us off the chance of looking inwardly, finding our own wisdom and building our own authentic lives.

Self-authoring is a greatest form of creativity.
